Next Generation Drug Developments

Preclinical and clinical studies with Combretastatin A4 Prodrug have provided OXiGENE with a unique and detailed understanding of how this compound selectively damages the new blood vessels present in tumors and also how clinical development of such compounds can be expedited. With this knowledge, the company is now advancing the development of new second-generation vascular targeting agents that have shown anti-neo-vascular activity in animal models.

Through a drug development alliance with Baylor University, OXiGENE is working on a new generation of small molecule vascular targeting agents. These second-generation agents are designed to occlude blood flow in the center of the tumor, and also to impair the vessels in the periphery (which appear to survive single agent treatment with the first-generation compound) delivering significant anti-tumor activity as a stand alone agent.
