Success Stories

It is unusual for a potential drug to enter the clinic for the first time and to have demonstrated evidence of clinical activity or efficacy. Yet, this was the case with Combretastatin A4 Prodrug.

A male patient (55 years old at the time of enrollment), who had a rare, aggressive form of thyroid cancer, showed the most dramatic effect. This patient had failed all standard treatments and the cancer was spreading to his chest.

He was the eighth patient treated with Combretastatin during experimental Phase I trials. After a number of treatments, the patient's tumors had shrunk to the point where they were no longer visible on scans. When doctors decided to biopsy and look for residual disease, they could not find any traces of the cancer.

This was Combretastatin's first "pathological complete remission," and the patient has been disease-free for more than three years.

Other highlights from Phase I clinical trials include:

  • Two patients experienced "prolonged periods of freedom from progression of their disease" as described by the trial physician.
  • A patient with colon cancer remained stable for 19 months.
  • A patient with medullary thyroid cancer remained stable for 12 months.
  • One patient, a 19-year-old with medullary thyroid cancer, achieved disease stabilization for 27 months.
  • Five other patients, including two with medullary thyroid cancer, exhibited clinically relevant degrees of disease stabilization.
